Released all the way back in August 2016, No Man's Sky is about to hit its eighth birthday, and there's never been a better time to reflect on the game and how far it's come. When No Man's Sky originally hit PS4 and PC, it was met with some infamously lackluster reviews from both critics and fans alike, many of whom criticized the developer for its overpromising of certain features that didn't make it to the launch-day edition. But that was a long time ago, and No Man's Sky is essentially a completely different game now.

Over the last eight years, developer Hello Games has worked tirelessly to deliver on the promises it once made. No Man's Sky has received over 30 major updates since its launch, and its latest one might be its most impressive to date. Whether players have already tried No Man's Sky years ago, or haven't touched the game once, there's never been a better time to give this Sci-Fi epic a go.

It's The Perfect Time to Dive Into No Man's Sky

No Man's Sky's Latest Update Makes Some Sweeping Changes

The vast majority of No Man's Sky's updates over the last eight years have each focused on one specific area of the game. Some good examples of this are No Man's Sky's first major update, "Foundation," which added base-building, the "Pathfinder" update, which added vehicles, and the "Abyss" update, which focused on underwater base-building, vehicles, and enemy types. This approach has allowed Hello Games to focus first and foremost on the areas of No Man's Sky that have required the most attention.

But with No Man's Sky having fixed all of its major issues and overhauled the vast majority of its gameplay components, Hello Games has now shifted to delivering more general updates that add a swathe of new features across a variety of different categories. The most recent No Man's Sky update, "Worlds Part 1," is the latest and greatest example of this new approach.

Released just a few weeks ago, No Man's Sky's Worlds Part 1 update refines the game's universe even further. Worlds Part 1 offers a complete visual and performance overhaul of No Man's Sky's cloud and water effects and adds a slew of new planet biomes. New hostile and friendly creatures have also been added with this update, alongside the ability to land on water and the ability to craft Solar ships. As the name implies, Worlds Part 1 is just one-half of No Man's Sky's latest major update, meaning that new players can jump on board now and still have something to look forward to in the near future.

No Man's Sky Has Never Been So Accessible

Though No Man's Sky's original premise wanted players to discover the universe for themselves, and thus didn't tutorialize its mechanics all too well, Hello Games has since added plenty of in-game messages and systems that should help newcomers to better understand its features. Additionally, No Man's Sky has also never been so accessible in terms of platforms. No Man's Sky is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Mac, and even Nintendo Switch. Those with PSVR2 or PCVR can also choose to fully immerse themselves in No Man's Sky, with it featuring full support for a variety of headsets and controllers.
