Juventus SACK Massimiliano Allegri days after winning Coppa Italia (2024)

Massimiliano Allegri has been sacked by Juventus following actions the Turin club deemed 'incompatible' with their values.

The coach had on Wednesday delivered their first piece of silverware in two seasons when they prevailed against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final. But the victory was marred by the 56-year-old's conduct after the match.

A club statement cited 'certain behaviours' during and after the final which they deemed 'incompatible' with their values.

Allegri's dismissal comes after he threatened and insulted an esteemed Italian journalist in the wake of Juventus' 1-0 triumph over Atalanta.

The now former Juventus head coach was sent off moments before full-time after losing his temper in the technical area and reportedly continued to express his fury with the media.

According to Tuttosport editor-in-chief Guido Vaciago, Allegri confronted him with threats and insults after the match, furious at the journalist for 'not writing the truth' in his newspaper.

Allegri is alleged to have told him, furiously: 'S*** editor, write the truth in your newspaper, not what society tells you. Stop playing hustlers with society!'

Vaciago, who claims to have told Allegri to calm down, was then reportedly pushed by the Italian and threatened.

'I know where to find you,' Allegri is said to have added. 'I'll come, and I'll rip both your ears out. I'll come and hit you in the face, write the truth in your newspaper.'

It is claimed a Juventus press officer then intervened by holding the manager back, escorting him away from the editor.

The tempestuous incident reportedly occurred just before Allegri's post-match press conference, during which the Old Lady manager looked visibly emotional and struggled to hold back tears.

Tuttosport led with the headline, 'Allegri wins the Cup and loses his mind', on Thursday morning. In the report, the outlet has labelled his behaviour 'vile, intimidating and dangerous'.

On Thursday the Allegri, through his lawyer, gave an official statement to Italian news agency ANSA denying the claims.

'[Allegri] Completely denies the reported version of events that occurred in the Stadio Olimpico tunnel with the editor of Tuttosport, Guido Vaciago, and specifies that it was simply "a heated, verbal altercation" in the heat of the moment with the editor, during which they both audibly insulted each other.'

Additionally, according to Sky Italia, simmering tensions with executives reached a boiling point after the victory at the Stadio Olimpico and precipitated his hasty exit.

Allegri's second departure from theAllianz Stadium ends under a cloud, having just secured his the first trophy of his second spell at the club.

His first was marked by continued success. In five years from 2014, Juve won five league titles, four Italian Cups and reached two Champions League finals.

Since returning in 2021 after a two-year hiatus from management, his remit had changed amid the club's financial and institutional issues. Allegri led Juve to a seventh-place finish last season.

While, this campaign his team at one point looked set to challenge Inter Milan for the title. However, a dismal run only two wins in 15 games has left them 25 points adrift of their arch rivals at the top.

In a strange twist of fate, his exit comes on the fifth anniversary of his departure from the Italian giants in 2019.

Juventus are thought to have an agreement in place for Bologna boss Thiago Motta to take over from next season. In fact, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport the club had been exploring whether they had a case for dismissal for just cause after the incident, with the manager potentially violating the club's code of conduct by allegedly crossing the line in such a way.
