[quote]Daniel Brühl is set to star as late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in “Kaiser Karl,” the anticipated Disney+ original series. The show is currently shooting in France, Monaco and Italy.
[quote]The six-part series will chronicle the rise of Karl Lagerfeld through the world of 1970s Parisian high fashion. The series will also explore the rivalry between Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent’s partner Pierre Berge, as well as his love story with Jacques de Bascher. Along with depicting the clan rivalries and ego battles of the high fashion world, the series will also portray the epic partying and decadence, tragic love affairs and friendships which marked Lagerfeld’s life.

Is there something for Colton?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 8, 2023 6:44 PM |
He will be fanning the flames of his f*ggotry!

I don't and won't have Disney +. If this turns out anything like Murphy's "Halston", it will be a badly-acted, and not-so-accurate piece of fluff, whose greatest redeeming quality is its visual appeal. If only the rest of the components of Murphy's projects could be as good the work of his design departments.
Anyway, I can't imagine it will be that interesting or accurate, given the platform.

Damn, he was sexy. Some newbie twink will get this role, no doubt.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 9, 2023 5:57 AM |
I’m here for this. Daniel Brühl is unexplainably sexy.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 9, 2023 6:20 AM |
He would be sexier if he had some lips.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 9, 2023 6:30 AM |
Brühl?? Nein! Matthias Schweighöfer? Jawohl!!

He looks very Hiddlestonesque at R8.

All six episodes out today on Hulu, anyone watching? Show has been renamed to "Becoming Karl Lagerfeld", guess "Kaiser Karl" spooked some in the focus group.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 7, 2024 6:06 PM |
Binging on Hulu this weekend. I've been looking forward to this.

Is Herr Bruhl a homosexualist?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 7, 2024 6:41 PM |
r12 A DLer in the know told me years ago that he's straight, just hyper-focused on his career, to an almost pathological degree. So he can come across as off/closeted sometimes because of that.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 7, 2024 6:46 PM |
Two episodes in. Entertaining, sexy, and the production design is magnifique.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 7, 2024 7:11 PM |
r14 Thanks, I'll give it a go. Do they converse in English?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 7, 2024 7:13 PM |
My default setting was dubbed, but I changed to to French with English closed captions because dubbing drives me up a wall. There's some German, as Dietrich's in the second episode.

[quote] Dietrich's in the second episode.
Her corpse must be so rotted now.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 7, 2024 7:35 PM |
He looks like a composite of every 80s teenage heart throb, a little Corey Feldman/Haim, a little Sean Astin, some River Phoenix.
I think he was made in a lab.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 7, 2024 7:42 PM |
Lagerfeld never had sex with de Bascher (what a missed opportunity). Was Kunty Karl asexual? Sex repulsed?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 8, 2024 5:57 AM |
He was one of those aesthetes like myself who love the idea of sex, just not so much the actual execution of it.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 8, 2024 6:06 AM |
Feeling very seen, r20!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 8, 2024 7:13 AM |
Not, r1, maybe some years ago he could have played those porno twinks Karl travelled around in the Riviera, but not anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 8, 2024 9:09 AM |
Five minutes into the premiere and I'm already obsessed! Had to immediately look up the director (Jérôme Salle) because the camera moves so beautifully. And it's lit for the gods, too. Can we please get that lighting Oscar already? It's crazy what the lighting masters are doing these days; a show like this would have looked so drab without their innovations even a decade ago.
Also, I had completely forgotten my darling Théodore Pellerin was in this, what a pleasant surprise. I keep rewinding the scenes to see his facial expressions again, I can already see it's going to take me forever to finish this show.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 8, 2024 7:23 PM |
r24 Oh my god, thank you for that, how cute is that? But also, as Daniel rightfully points out, a clever way to start their characters' relationship, get in the role immediately. This boy better go places, he stole every scene he was in recently in Franklin as well.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 8, 2024 8:10 PM |
Another Pellerin fan, who immediately stood out in Franklin (though not enough for me to stick with it).
Daniel Brühl is so damn ugly, but that fits for Lagerfeld, who was no looker.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 9, 2024 5:49 AM |
I can't judge Daniel's attractiveness objectively because I kinda look like him. But those extreme closeup shots aren't doing him any favours, what with all those moles. I swear they powdered his hands as well to make them look more pallid and more like Karl's.
Pellerin's beautiful doe eyes are hiding a fierceness behind them that is so characteristic of Québécois gays. Of all the gays in the world that are not to be fucked with, they are not to be fucked with the most. At least that's been my personal experience.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 9, 2024 6:27 AM |
The production design is so densely good that I'm going to be watching it several times.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 9, 2024 11:44 AM |
This is a great book about Karl and Yves and their early years. If you like the show, you would enjoy this book. Here it is in PDF
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 9, 2024 11:31 PM |
Finished it over the weekend. It loses momentum a bit in the final episode, but it's overall a great series that's worth watching. Also wondering if they left it open for a second round given how it ends.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 10, 2024 2:53 PM |
I made it to episode 4 and then gave up. I found it plodding and slow. Did not care about any of the characters and the creepy guy stalking Karl gave me the icks. I did agree with Dietrich - that blue/red outfit was hideous.

[quote]Also wondering if they left it open for a second round given how it ends.
I believe so. I was surprised how open ended it was. I guess if they get a second season it will tackle his Chanel years and the illness and death of Jacques.

Isn’t it time for the Aspie troll to surface? What with all the talk of eyes…
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 11, 2024 8:21 PM |
I loved his original scent. I couldn't afford it, but I'd rip those samples out of magazines like GQ. Then use the strips as a bookmarks.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 11, 2024 9:59 PM |
I find it phony, but maybe that's because I'm watching the dubbed version. Trying to turn this sad, transactional relationship into some great love affair, is boring. The music is driving me crazy.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 27, 2024 8:04 PM |
Yes, I think the dub might be creating a distance between yourself and the characters. I love the music and have started randomly humming it to myself throughout the day.
Pellerin and Arnaud as YSL have crazy chemistry. It's also the first time I've seen two guys with an impacted chest in a love scene together and I loved it! That Dietrich actress (Sunnyi Melles) was also outstanding, she killed that single shot scene where she excoriated Karl.
I'm still on the third episode. I did predict it would take me forever to finish it and so here I am.

By the way, that's Arnaud Valois of the 120 Beats per Minute (BPM) fame. Beautiful man.
