The number of fatal, opiate-related overdoses on Martha’s Vineyard has not let up, despite a decrease seen in fatalities around the state. A dead whale was found washed ashore on South Beach in Edgartown on Friday. Ainsley Smith, marine mammal stranding coordinator at the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), said the carcass was a “very decomposed sperm whale” estimated to be over 40 feet long.
